Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with a history stretching back more than 2,800 years. Despite its ancient roots, it feels vibrant and modern, with wide boulevards, lively cafes, and an ever-present view of the majestic Mount Ararat on the horizon. The city is a fascinating blend of old and new, where Soviet-era architecture sits alongside contemporary art galleries and bustling markets.

Republic Square is the heart of Yerevan, a grand space known for its ornate buildings made from pink volcanic tuff stone and a nightly fountain show that draws both locals and visitors. Not far away, the Cascade Complex offers sweeping views of the city and Mount Ararat, with gardens, stairways, and open-air sculptures that make it both a cultural and social hub.

Yerevan also has a thriving cafe and wine culture, with outdoor terraces that stay lively until late in the evening. The Vernissage market is another highlight, where visitors can browse handmade crafts, traditional carpets, jewelry, and Soviet-era memorabilia. A stroll through its tree-lined streets often leads to unexpected finds, whether it’s a tucked-away jazz bar or a bakery serving warm lavash.

Mother Armenia Statue
Mother Armenia, or Mayr Hayastan, is a monumental statue overlooking Yerevan from Victory Park on a hill above the city. The female figure was created by sculptor Ara Harutyunyan and replaced an earlier statue on the same pedestal, while its formal design presents Armenia as a protective female figure holding a sword. The monument is part of a memorial complex that includes the Military History Museum of Armenia in its base and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame nearby. Its elevated position provides broad views across Yerevan toward the surrounding mountains, making the statue a prominent landmark in the capital’s skyline.

Republic Square
Republic Square is the central civic square of Yerevan and one of the city’s most recognizable urban spaces. The broad oval plaza is surrounded by monumental pink and ochre tuff-stone buildings that house important government and cultural institutions, including the Government House, the History Museum of Armenia, the National Gallery of Armenia, and the Marriott Hotel. Designed as part of Alexander Tamanian’s plan for modern Yerevan, the square combines Armenian architectural traditions with a formal urban layout. Its central pool and musical fountains are a popular gathering point, while the surrounding buildings demonstrate the distinctive use of local volcanic stone that characterizes much of the capital.

The Cascade, Tamanyan Street
The Cascade is a monumental architectural complex on Tamanyan Street in central Yerevan, designed to connect the city center with the higher residential areas through a vast sequence of terraces, gardens, fountains, and stairways. The project was originally conceived by architect Alexander Tamanyan and later redesigned by Jim Torosyan with architects Sargis Gurzadyan and Aslan Mkhitaryan. Today, the complex houses the Cafesjian Center for the Arts, with exhibition galleries and an indoor escalator system, while the exterior and surrounding sculpture garden display works by artists including Fernando Botero and Jaume Plensa. The upper terraces provide broad views across Yerevan toward Mount Ararat.
