Just a few years ago, Puerto Escondido was a fishing village. Now Puerto Escondido is still remote enough to avoid the crowds of the more established resort areas and a perfect "out of the way" spot for those looking for a great, romantic escape.

Wedged between two magnificent outcroppings, the hilly dunes of Puerto Escondido are pleasantly uncrowded and perfect for sun worshippers to escape with a nap in the warm sun. For an unmatched dining adventure, try the pedestrian malls lining the central area of town near the beach. Here the freshest catch from the Pacific is transferred directly from net to grill. Plop down in a palapa and watch the day melt away over a plate of lobster, snapper or shrimp made to order with a fresh Mexican flair. South of the main village, the beach is bisected by a huge rock outcropping. The northern beach is quieter, with long days of sunbathing and children frolicking in the water. This beach is perfect for first-time surfers to try out a new skill. Rougher surf pounds the southern beach, Zicatela, where long-time surfers make daredevil tricks part of the daily routine. Boards can be rented along both beaches. Underwater fun is only a short ride away at Puerto Angelito, where beautiful coral formations close to the water's edge make a perfect environment for snorkeling. At night, the excellent food and exotic drinks flow freely. Music drifts softly along the sand, as Latin hits and beachside favorites float out of beachside bars and discos.
