Knoxville sits in the Great Valley of East Tennessee at the headwaters of the Tennessee River, with the Appalachian Mountains rising to the east and southeast. The city combines a historic downtown with riverfront parks, leafy neighborhoods, and easy access to outdoor areas. Market Square remains a central gathering place, surrounded by restaurants, shops, and public spaces, while Gay Street forms a major downtown corridor with historic theaters and restored buildings. Knoxville is also home to the University of Tennessee, giving the city a strong academic and sporting presence alongside its long-standing connections to music and the arts.

Knoxville’s history is closely connected to the Cherokee people, the early settlement of East Tennessee, and its former role as the capital of the Southwest Territory. Blount Mansion, the city’s only National Historic Landmark, provides insight into the political history of the early settlement. James White’s Fort recalls the community’s frontier beginnings, while the East Tennessee History Center explores the wider story of the region. Knoxville also played an important role during the Civil War, and historic homes, cemeteries, and walking routes across the city preserve stories from that period and from the generations that followed.

World’s Fair Park is one of Knoxville’s most recognisable public spaces, marked by the Sunsphere, a remaining landmark from the city’s World’s Fair. Along the Tennessee River, Volunteer Landing provides walking paths and open views, while the nearby Urban Wilderness contains trails, forests, rock formations, and former quarry landscapes. Ijams Nature Center protects more than 300 acres of natural areas along the Tennessee River and offers trails, boardwalks, and wildlife viewing. Knoxville also serves as a gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which lies within an easy drive of the city.

Knoxville has a strong food and music identity shaped by East Tennessee traditions and its long connection with country music. Market Square hosts a farmers’ market where regional growers and producers sell seasonal foods, baked goods, and prepared dishes. The city is often associated with the early development of country music, with performers and musicians such as Roy Acuff and Chet Atkins connected to Knoxville. Local dining includes Southern cooking, barbecue, biscuits, and Appalachian-inspired dishes, alongside newer restaurants and breweries. The city’s creative scene also includes the Knoxville Museum of Art, independent galleries, and live music venues.
