Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital and cultural heart, sits in a fertile valley surrounded by the Himalayan foothills. Once a vital stop on ancient trade routes, it has grown into a city where centuries-old traditions mingle with the energy of modern life. Narrow lanes are lined with shrines, courtyards, and bustling markets, while the scent of incense drifts from temples where daily rituals still take place. At its center lies Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with intricately carved palaces and pagoda-style temples that showcase the artistry of the Newar people.

The city is also a gateway to Nepal’s spiritual and religious heritage. Swayambhunath, the “Monkey Temple,” crowns a hilltop with sweeping views of the valley, while Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest in the world, draws Buddhist pilgrims from across the globe. Pashupatinath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is one of Hinduism’s most sacred sites, where traditions of worship and cremation rituals unfold along the banks of the Bagmati River.

Kathmandu hums with contrasts: chaotic traffic beside serene monasteries, lively bazaars near quiet garden courtyards. Beyond its historic and spiritual sites, the city’s cafés, art galleries, and trekking shops reflect its role as both a cultural hub and a launch point for Himalayan adventures.
