Addis Ababa is the capital of Ethiopia and a highland city set at the foot of the Entoto Mountains. Its elevated setting gives the city a relatively cool climate compared with much of the country, while broad avenues, busy neighborhoods, green hills, and expanding modern districts create a varied urban landscape. Addis Ababa is also the headquarters of the African Union and hosts numerous international organizations, giving it an important diplomatic role across the continent. The city combines government institutions, universities, museums, markets, restaurants, and cafés with traditional neighborhoods and busy commercial areas.

Addis Ababa has a strong connection with Ethiopia’s political, religious, and cultural heritage. The National Museum of Ethiopia houses important archaeological collections, including the famous hominin fossil known as Lucy, while the Ethnological Museum occupies the former palace of Emperor Haile Selassie within the grounds of Addis Ababa University. Holy Trinity Cathedral is one of the city’s principal religious landmarks, and the Entoto area contains churches and historic sites associated with the development of the capital. The Adwa Victory Memorial commemorates Ethiopia’s victory over Italy and forms part of the city’s growing collection of public historical monuments.

The Entoto Mountains provide one of Addis Ababa’s most distinctive natural settings, with eucalyptus forests, walking areas, viewpoints, and recreational spaces overlooking the city. Entoto Park and Unity Park offer landscaped areas for recreation within the capital, while Friendship Park provides another green space near the city center. Addis Ababa’s urban landscape also includes Merkato, one of Africa’s largest open-air markets, where traders sell clothing, spices, household goods, food, and locally made products. The city’s combination of highland scenery and dense urban development makes its neighborhoods markedly different from one another.

Food and coffee are central to life in Addis Ababa, with restaurants and cafés serving both traditional Ethiopian dishes and international cuisine. Injera, the sourdough flatbread made from teff, is commonly served with stews such as doro wat, tibs, and vegetarian preparations. Ethiopian coffee is traditionally prepared through a ceremonial process in which beans are roasted, ground, brewed, and served in small cups, often accompanied by snacks. The city also has a strong contemporary café and restaurant culture, while traditional music venues and jazz clubs contribute to Addis Ababa’s distinctive cultural scene.
