Bayonne is a waterfront city in Hudson County, New Jersey, occupying a peninsula between Newark Bay, New York Bay, and the Kill Van Kull. Its location gives the city a strong maritime identity, while its compact residential streets and commercial corridors retain elements of a traditional urban community. Broadway forms the main commercial spine, with shops, restaurants, and neighborhood businesses stretching through the city. The Bayonne Bridge is one of its most recognizable landmarks, spanning the Kill Van Kull to Staten Island. Waterfront parks, walking paths, and views across the harbor add another dimension to the city.

Bayonne’s history begins with the Lenni Lenape people, followed by Dutch and British settlement and later waves of immigration from Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Maritime activity, boatbuilding, fishing, oyster harvesting, railroads, and oil refining all played important roles in the city’s development. The former Military Ocean Terminal also became a major shipping and military facility. Historic buildings include St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Church, St. Henry’s Church, and the Bayonne Public Library. The city’s diverse communities have contributed to its religious institutions, food traditions, businesses, and cultural life.

Bayonne’s waterfront provides several places to experience the city’s relationship with the surrounding waterways. Dennis P. Collins Park includes walking paths, a fishing pier, recreational facilities, and views across Newark Bay, while Richard A. Rutkowski Park offers birdwatching, walking, and cycling paths along a restored waterfront landscape. The Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor occupies the former military terminal and contains open spaces beside the harbor. The Bayonne Bridge provides a dramatic view across the Kill Van Kull and connects the city with Staten Island. These waterfront areas offer a different setting from the busy streets and commercial districts farther inland.

Bayonne’s food scene reflects the many communities that have made the city home, with local restaurants offering Italian, Latin American, Indian, Middle Eastern, and other cuisines alongside traditional New Jersey fare. Broadway remains an important destination for neighborhood dining and shopping. The city also hosts community concerts and cultural events at places such as DiDomenico-16th Street Park, where an outdoor amphitheater provides a setting for summer performances. One distinctive feature of Bayonne is its long, narrow geography: much of the city is surrounded by water, while its streets and numbered cross streets create a compact urban layout shaped by its peninsula setting.
