Sainte-Rose, located on the eastern coast of Réunion, is a small town where the island’s volcanic character is on full display. This part of the island has been shaped by lava flows from Piton de la Fournaise, including dramatic eruptions that have reached the sea and created striking black rock formations along the coast. Visitors can still see these hardened lava fields, which offer a reminder of the island’s ever-changing landscape.

The area is also known for its rugged natural beauty. The coastline features lava cliffs, blowholes, and quiet coves, while inland, lush vegetation thrives thanks to the region’s high rainfall. Hiking trails lead into green valleys and past waterfalls, making it a destination for those who enjoy exploring untamed nature. Sainte-Rose is also home to the Anse des Cascades, a picturesque spot with small waterfalls, palm groves, and views of the sea.

Beyond its natural scenery, Sainte-Rose preserves a strong cultural and spiritual identity. The town’s church, Notre-Dame-des-Laves, is famous for surviving a lava flow in 1977 that stopped right at its doors, a story that locals often share with pride. Visitors can also explore small fishing villages nearby and enjoy local specialties such as fresh seafood and Creole dishes influenced by the island’s diverse heritage.
