Fréjus is a Mediterranean city in southeastern France’s Var department, situated between the Esterel hills and the coast. Its identity combines a substantial Roman heritage with a historic Provençal center and a modern seaside district. The city stretches from the old town toward Fréjus-Plage and Port-Fréjus, where sandy beaches meet the Mediterranean. Inland areas include wooded hills, vineyards, and the neighborhoods around Tour de Mare. This varied setting gives Fréjus a distinct character within the Côte d’Azur, with Roman monuments, coastal landscapes, and everyday Provençal life found within a compact area.

Fréjus was established as the Roman city of Forum Iulii and became an important port and regional center. Remains of this period include the Roman amphitheater, aqueduct, theater, and Porte des Gaules. The medieval center adds another layer of history around Saint-Léonce Cathedral, whose complex includes a Romanesque church, an early Christian baptistery, and a cloister with painted wooden ceilings. The old episcopal quarter and narrow streets provide a clear contrast with the more open coastal districts, while local traditions remain closely connected to Provence, including markets, religious celebrations, and pétanque.

The Roman amphitheater is one of Fréjus’s most recognizable landmarks, with its surviving stone and brick structures set against the surrounding urban landscape. Saint-Léonce Cathedral and its cloister form the architectural center of the historic town, while sections of the ancient aqueduct can still be seen around the city. Along the coast, Fréjus-Plage has a long sandy shoreline and a seafront promenade, while Port-Fréjus provides a modern harbor setting. Nearby Saint-Aygulf extends toward the Villepey ponds, a protected wetland area with coastal habitats and birdlife.

Food in Fréjus reflects the cuisine of Provence and the Mediterranean, with local markets offering produce, olives, herbs, cheeses, and regional specialties. The surrounding Var countryside is also known for Côtes de Provence wines, and vineyards remain part of the landscape around the city. Pétanque has a particularly strong local presence, with Fréjus-Plage associated with the game and its public courts. Another distinctive feature is the coexistence of major Roman remains and an active seaside community: ancient monuments, working streets, restaurants, beaches, and the marina all form part of the same urban area.
