Nelson is a small city in southeastern British Columbia, set along the West Arm of Kootenay Lake and surrounded by the Selkirk Mountains. Steep hills rise around the city, giving many streets views toward the lake and forested slopes. Nelson is known for its well-preserved historic downtown, heritage buildings, independent shops, galleries, and access to outdoor recreation. The city also serves as a regional centre for the West Kootenay, with nearby lakes, rivers, mountain trails, and ski areas adding to its connection with the surrounding landscape.

Nelson has a strong connection to the Kootenay region's Indigenous peoples, particularly the Sinixt, Ktunaxa, and Syilx communities. The city's later development was closely tied to mining, transportation, forestry, and settlement around Kootenay Lake. Many buildings in the downtown area reflect the city's resource-based past, while local arts and craft traditions have become an important part of its present-day identity. The Nelson Museum, Archives & Gallery provides exhibits on regional history, Indigenous cultures, mining, settlement, and the development of the surrounding communities.

The historic downtown contains a large collection of heritage buildings, including the Hume Hotel and the restored Civic Theatre, while Baker Street forms the centre of the city's commercial district. Lakeside Park follows the shoreline of the West Arm and provides beaches, walking areas, gardens, and views across the water. Outside the city, Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park protects alpine landscapes, glaciers, lakes, and mountain terrain, while nearby Whitewater Ski Resort offers access to the Selkirk Mountains. Hiking, paddling, fishing, skiing, and mountain biking are popular activities in the wider area.

Nelson's food scene draws on ingredients common to the Kootenay region, including locally grown fruit and vegetables, meat, baked goods, and craft beverages. Farmers' markets and independent food businesses contribute to the city's connection with surrounding farms and small producers. A distinctive local feature is the Nelson Hydro electric system, which supplies power from the Kootenay River and nearby watersheds. The city is also recognized for its collection of heritage homes, many built on steep streets above the lake. This combination of historic architecture, mountain geography, and arts-focused businesses gives Nelson a distinct character within British Columbia's interior.
