Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, rises on the shores of the Caspian Sea as a city of striking contrasts. Its futuristic skyline, defined by the Flame Towers, glows each evening in waves of light, while the UNESCO-listed Old City preserves centuries of history within its fortified walls. Here, visitors can explore the mysterious Maiden Tower, medieval caravanserais, and the elegant Shirvanshah’s Palace, all nestled in winding streets that evoke the city’s Silk Road past.

Modern Baku is just as compelling. The Heydar Aliyev Center, designed by Zaha Hadid, is an architectural masterpiece that seems to flow in graceful curves, housing exhibitions and cultural events. Along the Caspian waterfront, the Baku Boulevard stretches for miles, offering gardens, cafes, and views of the sea. It's an inviting place to walk, cycle, or relax. The city also boasts vibrant shopping streets and bustling markets where traditional crafts sit alongside contemporary fashion.

Culinary traditions bring another layer of discovery. From fragrant saffron-infused plov to fresh seafood and sweet pastries, dining in Baku reveals the diverse flavors of Azerbaijan’s heritage. Visitors often end their day in a tea house, where black tea is served with jams, dried fruits, and local hospitality.

Baku Eye
The Baku Eye, officially known as the Baku Ferris Wheel, is a 60-meter-tall observation wheel on Baku’s Caspian waterfront, forming part of the city’s Seaside Boulevard. Opened as part of the expanded section of the boulevard, the wheel provides elevated views across Baku Bay, the Caspian Sea, and the city skyline. Its location places it close to several of Baku’s modern waterfront attractions, including Little Venice, the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum, and Deniz Mall. The Baku Eye is especially distinctive for the way its circular structure contrasts with the linear promenade and the modern architectural landmarks that surround the bay.

Icherisheher
Icherisheher, meaning “Inner City,” is the historic walled core of Baku and one of Azerbaijan’s most important architectural ensembles. Located on a hill beside the Caspian Sea, the district retains much of its medieval defensive walls and a dense network of narrow streets, stone houses, mosques, caravanserais, bathhouses, and small courtyards. Its best-known landmarks are the Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, while the Muhammad Mosque and historic trading buildings add further layers to the cityscape. Icherisheher remains a living neighborhood with residents, cafés, galleries, museums, and shops, and together with the Maiden Tower and Shirvanshahs’ Palace it forms a UNESCO World Heritage property.

Martyrs' Lane
Martyrs’ Lane, known in Azerbaijani as Şəhidlər Xiyabanı, is a memorial cemetery and viewpoint on a hill overlooking Baku and the Caspian Sea. It commemorates Azerbaijanis and foreign nationals who died during the events surrounding the Black January crackdown and the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Rows of dark stone graves line the hillside, while the Eternal Flame monument stands at the upper end of the memorial complex. The site also includes the Turkish Martyrs’ Memorial, dedicated to Ottoman soldiers who died in Baku during the Battle of Baku. Its elevated position provides views across the city and waterfront, while the memorial remains an important place of remembrance in Azerbaijan.
