Point Reyes is a rugged coastal region of Northern California, extending into the Pacific Ocean on the western side of Marin County. Much of the peninsula is protected within Point Reyes National Seashore, where windswept beaches, coastal cliffs, grasslands, forests, wetlands, and rocky headlands create a varied landscape. The peninsula is separated from the mainland by Tomales Bay and a series of low-lying wetlands and waterways. Its relatively undeveloped coastline provides a strong contrast with the densely populated San Francisco Bay Area farther south and east.

Point Reyes has longstanding connections to the Coast Miwok people, whose ancestral lands include the peninsula and surrounding coastal areas. The region was later explored by European navigators and became associated with ranching, dairy farming, fishing, and maritime activity. Historic ranches and dairy operations remain within the national seashore, reflecting the area's continuing agricultural traditions. The Point Reyes Lighthouse is another important landmark, built to help guide ships along a coastline known for fog, strong winds, and offshore hazards. The area’s history therefore combines Indigenous heritage, agriculture, and maritime navigation.

The peninsula contains numerous notable natural sites, including Drakes Beach, Limantour Beach, Point Reyes Beach, and the Tule Elk Reserve. The Point Reyes Lighthouse sits on a steep coastal promontory and provides views across the Pacific, while the Cypress Tree Tunnel leads to a historic radio station near the lighthouse area. Elephant seals can often be observed at beaches along the coast, and gray whales pass offshore during their migrations. Inland, trails cross coastal prairie, Douglas fir forest, wetlands, and open hills, while Tomales Bay supports oysters, shorebirds, harbor seals, and other marine and estuarine wildlife.

Food in the Point Reyes area reflects its agricultural and maritime traditions. Local farms and dairies produce cheese, milk, and other specialty products, while Tomales Bay is known for oyster farming and shellfish. Nearby communities such as Point Reyes Station provide cafés, bakeries, markets, and restaurants that make use of products from surrounding farms and waters. Another distinctive feature is the coexistence of working ranches with protected public lands inside the national seashore. This combination of agriculture, wildlife habitat, historic sites, and exposed Pacific coastline gives Point Reyes a landscape that is both actively used and carefully conserved.
